China's largest man-made beach will reopen this Friday with a lower admission price, following a six-month renovation project aims to attract more visitors to the out-of-the-way location.
It takes about three hours via public transportation to travel from People's Square to Bihai Jinsha Beach, which is located in the city's far southern Fengxian district.
Admission will cost 30 yuan ($4.71) per person as of the reopening, down from 60 yuan previously.
"We lowered the price to attract more visitors," Wu Dong, head of the beach office, told the Global Times yesterday.
The beach drew 180,000 visitors last year and officials expect the number to rise to between 250,000 and 300,000 this year.
The renovations included adding a turtle pool, an expanded food court, a renovated stage to screen movies at night, and a platform where visitors can hit golf balls into the sea.
The beach will now be open year-round and visitors will be able to purchase annual passes priced at 160 yuan for each individual and 280 yuan for each family.
To visit Bihai Jinsha Beach, one can take Line 8 to the Aerospace Museum Station, then transfer to the Sea-Aerospace bus. Visitors will need to present health certificates to enter.
Shanghai's other two beaches are Jinshan City Beach in Jinshan district, which is free to the public, and Sunny Beach at the southern end of the Bund, which costs 20 yuan.
