A 200- year-old Muslim Sufi shrine gutted in a fire incident Monday in Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The historical shrine of Sheikh Syed Abdul Qadir Jeelani (locally called Dastgeer Sahib) is in old part of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

However, officials said the relics of the 11th century saint are safe.

"Fire broke out inside the shrine of Dastgeer Sahib this morning around 6.30 a.m. (local time)," said a police official. "Soon after fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the flames."

Hundreds of locals thronged the locality to douse the flames, however, the fire caused massive damages to the shrine built mainly with wood. Women were seen wailing outside the shrine as they watched flames.

The cause of the fire was not known immediately.

"We are ascertaining the cause of the fire," said a police official.

Majority of Kashmiri Muslims including women are shrine visitors. Every year thousands of people from across the region throng the shrine on saint's anniversary.

The incident has sent shock waves across Muslim majority areas and triggered clashes in the city. Police said local youth attacked them by throwing stones on their vehicles.
