Indonesia has settled the procurement on a total of 100 Leopard main battle tank (MBT) from Germany with initial delivery expected in October this year, local media reported on Friday.
"On TNI (Indonesian military) birthday eve, you will see 15 Leopard tanks," said Defense Ministry spokesman Brig. Gen. Hartind Asrin, referring to the TNI birthday on Oct.5.
The delivery of the 60-ton Leopard MBT tank will continue until 2014, Hartind said, adding that there was no problem with the Germany parliament regarding Indonesia's purchase of the tank.
The MBT tanks will initially be stationed in several points in Java island, the Antara news service reported.
Indonesia initially planned to buy the tanks from the Netherlands, but it was opposed by several parties in that country, which made Indonesia turn to the tank's original designer country, Germany.
