Homegrown car brands in China are always regarded as being incompetent in safety performance, while Geely, as a leader of Chinese car maker, has changed this stereotyped image with incredible achievements. Geely Gleagle GX7 received 5+ starts with 50.3 scores in this year's second China-New Car Assessment Program (C-NCAP) test. In July 31, Geely held a conference in Chengdu to analyze the technical features of GX7.
C-NCAP is the Chinese crash testing authority. This year's second C-NCAP test was a fierce competition, with candidates from the new generation of Ford Focus, Tidda of Nissan, Verso of Toyota and other models from joint ventures. Eventually, Geely's GX7 overtook other car models and became the first model being rated 5+ stars in C-NCAP test among all homegrown brands and the second SUV with such an honor after Honda's CR-V. GX7 of Geely, Camry of Toyota and Accord of Honda tied for the fourth place among all 172 models assessed by C-NCAP to date. "Homegrown brands have achieved world level of safety performance", one reporter claimed.
In 2009, Geely's Gleagle Panda became China's first locally researched and developed A00 sedan being awarded a 5-star rating in C-NCAP crash test. The following several years witnessed great strides in Geely's safety performance, with Emgrand and other two models receiving 5-star and 5+ stars in crash tests. "When Geely first got a 5-star rating in C-NCAP test, people say Geely just copied others' advance technology and the 5-star is just a matter of chance. Now, Geely's models receive amazing testing results home and abroad, and the fact itself demonstrates that Geely is an excellent car maker and the achievements come with a reason, which is the scientific and fit-for-Geely development and management system of auto safety performance", says Zhao Fuquan, vice-chairman of Geely Holding Group and Head of Geely Automobile Research Institute.
Zhao Fuquan and his R&D team's achievements all started from Geely's strategic transmission in 2007. Since then Geely has strived to practice the concepts of "Technical Geely" and "Quality Geely".
In 2009,Geely successfully acquired Drivetrain Systems International (DSI), the world's second largest automatic transmission company. This move breaks the technical blockade of foreign companies in this area and makes it possible for Chinese car makers to be a world leader in automatic transmission technology. Also, it solves the technical difficulties of 6-speed automatic transmission (6AT), a hard bone for domestic car makers. DVVT, the engine independently-developed by Geely, can lift 10% of motive power and reduce 5% of oil consumption. GVVT and DSI's 6AT can work together as an advanced powertrain. Geely has formed strategic partnership with 16 of world's top 20 automobile parts joint ventures. In 2010, Geely completed its acquisition of Ford Motor Co.'s Volvo unit and the two sides have started technical cooperation.
Geely always puts safety first and this can be demonstrated by the safety performance of more and more car models. After the frontal impact test against rigid barrier, the side impact test against mobile deformable barrier and the frontal impact test against deformable barrier, Gleagle GX7 body was still in good condition and the doors could be opened smoothly. GX7 is equipped with seven airbags with KABs, especially the knee airbags rarely seen in the market, so the passenger compartment kept intact and the crash test dummy remained safe. The high tensile steel plate is extensively used in this model, even up to 53 percent. GX7 is also the only homegrown car model using the laser welding technology in the space from of pole B, which ensures that the deformability is controllable in crash.
Geely's product capability has experienced great leaps and achieved advanced level and its improvement has won wide recognition from customers. Geely's sales performance becomes the ladder for it to climb on the Fortune 500. The newly released Fortune 500 shows that Geely, with the revenue of $23.3557 billion (including Volvo's revenue 2011), broke into the Fortune 500 for the first time. In 2011, Geely was the 688th and the 213 leaps make it the fastest rising company.
Geely plans to launch new models in the second half of 2012. According to Liu Jinliang, vice-chairman and sales manager of Geely, new models to be launched in the second half include SC3, SC6 and SC7 (6AT) of Englon, Emgrand EC8 equipped with DVVT and 6AT/6MT and Gleagle GX7 with 2.4L engine and 6AT.
Geely has recently adjusted its marketing framework. The formal vertical marketing of Emgrand, Gleagle, and Englon will be restructured as region mode, which leads to three regional marketing groups located in north, central and west China under the direction of marketing headquarters. Each regional headquarters will be responsible for media and sales work. The marketing reform will strengthen Geely's market strategy and improve brands planning and management.
