Myanmar's parliament Wednesday approved Commander-in-Chief of the Navy Admiral Nyan Tun as new vice president to succeed outgoing U Tin Aung Myint Oo who has resigned for health reason.

Nyan Tun was nominated by the military parliamentarians group as candidate for the open post of vice president left by U Tin Aung Myint Oo and Nyan Tun was found qualified with the vice presidential post after scrutiny by the parliament.

There are two vice presidents in Myanmar's new civilian government attached with the president according to the constitution. The other is Dr. Sai Mauk Kham.

Nyan Tun was sworn into office on the day in front of the speaker of the parliament shortly after he was so named by the parliament, attended by 616 MPs out of 654.

Nyan Tun had been Commander-in-Chief of the Navy since 2008.

The appointment of the new vice president was delayed for over one month until now despite being prescribed by the constitution that it be done in seven days when the parliament is in session.

The current 4th parliament session comprising two Houses is the first convened after April 1 by-elections.

The parliament members include 25-percent non-elected and directly-nominated representatives from the military according to the 2008 Constitution.

President U Thein Sein-led Myanmar civilian government, formed with 34 ministries at central level with 30 ministers, began its five-year term of office on March 30, 2011.

In May this year, the president announced that the country has entered into a "second-step strategic reform", calling for more effectively carrying out national and regional development tasks in the reform process.
