New standards of filial piety were released by the Chinese government on Monday, sparking a heated discussion on Internet, Beijing News reported.

Many of the standards are based on the ancient Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) text "The 24 Paragons of Filial Piety", including such acts as regularly vacationing with one's parents.

However, the list also contains filial piety for the new millennium, such as buying insurance for your parents and teaching them how to surf the Internet.

@世联高建: The only standard should be having a filial heart. Of course, the ways filial piety is expressed also depend on one's financial situation, social status and level of understanding. Most netizens can't live up to all the 24 standards, so does that mean they're not filial?

@Koei_高胖胖:
Ancient filial standards were illustrated by 24 stories. Now it has become 24 rules. It is boring and dogmatic.

@海峡教育网:
The new standards closely reflect real life today. Teaching parents to surf the Internet and encouraging single parents to remarry are considered social breakthroughs. Their intentions are good, but these standards also show the government is concerned that people are no longer filial enough.

@唐钧:
These new rules are more realistic for people living in the same city with their parents. But for everyone else, only the fifth standard – calling your parents every week – is feasible. What a waste of energy to release these rules. The government should just mandate more paid vacation to visit family instead.
