China's meteorological authority said Sunday super typhoon Sanba, the 16th typhoon of the year, will bring strong winds to regions along its course and rainstorms to Northeast China over the next few days.

The typhoon, positioned at 5 pm Sunday in the East China Sea about 440 kilometers southeast of South Korea's southern Jeju island, will move northwest at a speed of around 35 kilometers per hour and bring heavy rains to China's northeastern provinces from Monday to Tuesday, according to the National Meteorological Center (NMC).

The typhoon, with winds of 187 kilometer per hour, is expected to make landfall on the Korean Peninsula around noon on Monday, and will probably hit Northeast China around the same time.

Storms will lash north and southeast of Heilongjiang Province and eastern Jilin Province on Monday and Tuesday, as some regions will see downpours of 100 to 120 millimeters, the NMC forecast said.

The center's forecast said that the typhoon will bring strong winds to the western part of East China Sea, the estuary of the Yangtze River, the Hangzhou Bay, the central and southern parts of the Yellow Sea by Tuesday.

The nation's flood control authority on Friday urged residents in the coastal regions to be fully prepared for Sanba and take precautions against strong wind, heavy precipitation.

A super typhoon is an intense storm equal to a Category 4 or 5 hurricane.
