Brunei Darussalam's oldest Chinese school, Chung Hwa Middle School, celebrated its 90th anniversary on Thursday in the capital.
His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei Hassanal Bolkiah attended the celebration of the oldest Chinese school in the country, along with Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince of Brunei and some other royal members and government ministers.
In his speech, Hassanal Bolkiah congratulated Chung Hwa Middle School for its tremendous contribution to the society in terms of education over nine decades. He expressed the hope that the school will continue to enhance its competency as the government is seeking to provide educational training to teachers not only in public schools, but also in private schools.
Mr. Ong Tiong Oh, Acting Chairman of the School Board of Directors said in his opening speech that Chung Hwa Middle School had been following the guidelines of national education policies, continously cultivating young talents for the country.
Chung Hwa Middle School was launched in 1922 with only a rented two-storey shop as its classroom. It is now one of Brunei Darussalam's biggest Chinese school with more than 3,000 students. Many of Brunei's Chinese entrepreneurs are graduates from the middle school, and one of the most famous alumni is the famous singer and actor Wu Chun. Endidtem
