Baron Waqa elected as new president of Nauru

Baron Waqa had been elected as the new president of Nauru at a sitting of parliament on Tuesday, according to the government of the Republic of Nauru.

Two nominations for president were put forward for Baron Waqa and former finance minister Hon Roland Kun. Waqa won the vote 13 to five.

President-elect Baron Waqa first entered parliament in 2003 in the 15th parliament as an education minister.

Earlier in the morning, the new members were sworn in to the 21st parliament before Judge John von Doussa, after which members proceeded to elect a speaker and a deputy speaker.

Former president and speaker Ludwig Scotty and former finance and foreign minister Kieren Keke were nominated for speaker. Scotty defeated Keke 14 votes to five, becoming the new Speaker.

New MP Ranin Akua was elected to be deputy speaker.

Parliament is adjourned until this Thursday.
