Police arrested a Shanghai resident after he confessed to stealing nearly half a million yuan in cash from a buried barrel at his neighbors’ yard.

The Chongming-area man told police he had dug up a white plastic barrel containing 480,000 yuan ($78,240) on April 23 and buried it under his own chicken coop two days later, according to reports.

The man explained he had stumbled upon his neighbor burying the barrel after waking up late on April 16 for a drink. A couple of days later, he then noticed his neighbor had planted some eggplants in the spot to cover it up.

The neighbor notified police after discovering the missing cash, who after a brief search were led to the suspect’s chicken coop on May 2 and unearthed 420,000 yuan ($68,460). The suspect and his family returned the remaining 60,000 yuan ($9,780), the report added.

Prosecutors from the Chongming People’s Procuratorate reminded residents that burying large amounts of cash is unsafe and recommend a home safe or bank deposit.
