A district court has ordered a hotel to pay a guest 11,000 yuan ($1,791) in compensation after she tripped and fell in her hotel room, the court said Monday.

The plaintiff, surnamed Jin, was going to answer the door of her room at a Motel 168 in Minhang district last September when she tripped on two steps leading to the door, according to a press release from Minhang District People's Court. She hit the floor and lost consciousness.

Jin's daughter, who was outside the room, had to get the hotel staff to open the door so they could send Jin to the hospital.

Jin sued the hotel for 15,000 yuan to cover her medical bills and compensate her for the income she lost from missing work, the court said. She argued that the steps were difficult to see because they were covered in gray carpet and there wasn't enough light in that part of the room.

The hotel refused to take full responsibility for Jin's fall. It argued that Jin was partially to blame because she didn't pay close enough attention to where she was walking.

The court ruled that the hotel should pay 60 percent of Jin's claim because it failed to put up warning signs for the steps.

The court also advised the hotel to change the color of the carpet in the room to make it easier for guests to see the steps. It also suggested that the hotel avoid booking pregnant women, children and the elderly in rooms with steps.
