Police have arrested a man charged with raping an 18-year-old woman who he had kept chained in an underground room for 11 days in Jiaxing, East China's Zhejiang Province, the Qianjiang Evening News reported on August 6.
The Xiuzhou disctrict procuratorate approved the arrest of 36-year-old Chen Xialong on June 25, just days after neighbors saw the woman signaling for help while nude from the window of his rented home.
The woman, surnamed Guo from nearby Anhui Province, told authorities she had managed to escape her small cell by slowly filing through her iron chains with a nail clipper over the course of her captivity.
Chen, a native of Henan Province, told police he had picked up Guo outside a local KTV club on his tricycle on June 12. He is unemployed and explained he sometimes picks up fares in his trike.
He then allegedly gagged and bound Guo's wrists before kidnapping her to his homemade dungeon – a 3-square meter, 1.5-meter high room Chen dug under his rented house over the past six months.
Chen admitted he kept Guo chained while naked in the cellar, and only allowed her to emerge from her cell twice to shower.
He later told police he had gotten the idea to kidnap and torture Guo from reading two internet novels, the paper reported.
