Indian navy on Friday evening extricated the fifth body of 18 sailors trapped in the sunken submarine INS Sindhurakshak as official spokesman said it is unlikely to find any survivors, local news channel NDTV reported on August 17.

The "severely disfigured" bodies are so badly charred that on- the-spot identification was impossible, Defence spokesman Narendra Vispute said.

Eighteen Indian navy personnel remained trapped after a Russian- made Indian Navy submarine caught fire, exploded and sank at midnight Wednesday in a major marine base in downtown Mumbai.

The INS Sindhurakshak is a 10 Kilo-class submarine purchased from Russia in 1997, and it is equipped with Russian Club-S cruise missile systems. India recently spent 18 million US dollars in modifying the 16-year-old submarine in Russia.
