A US Army attack reconnaissance squadron was deployed in South Korea as part of Washington's efforts to rebalance the Asia-Pacific region, the US Forces Korea (USFK) said Friday.

The 4th Squadron of the 6th Cavalry Regiment arrived at Camp Humphreys in Pyeongtaek, south of the country's capital Seoul, on Wednesday from Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington to begin its rotational deployment, the US Second Infantry Division said in a statement.

The squadron is the first unit to execute the US Army's new 9-month rotational deployments to South Korea. The unit brings some 380 soldiers and 30 OH-58D Kiowa Warrior helicopters to Camp Humphreys.

"The attack reconnaissance squadron is a rotational force that is part of the Army's strategy to get regionally aligned rotational forces," said Col. Walter Rugen, 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade commander. "They are bringing a great scout, security and reconnaissance capability in addition to a fires capability that is tremendous."

The deployment would reinforce the Pentagon's commitment to rebalancing the Asia-Pacific region, the USFK said, noting that it would strengthen capabilities to deter aggression on the Korean peninsula.
