World Cup-winning coach Marcello Lippi has signed a new three-year contract with Chinese Super League (CSL) club Guangzhou Evergrande, the Guangzhou-based club announced Friday.
The 65-year-old Italian and his coaching team will remain in China until the end of 2017, said the club.
"We believe the successful contract extension for our world class coaching team with Lippi at its core will help maintain our leading position," the club said in a statement.
The salary of the coaching team remains as much as their last contract, according to the club, which is reportedly up to 10 million euros ($13.79 million).
"Lippi agreed to take a pay cut in the next three years, but the club refused to decrease his salary," said a club official who required anonymity.
Former assistant coach Maddaloni Massimiliano will be the team's executive coach, and Pezzotti Narciso will be the new assistant coach, according to the club.
The club had offered Lippi a new contract in December in Morocco, where the Asian champions Evergrande were competing at the FIFA Club World Cup. But Lippi declined the offer.
"Lippi earlier said he decided to leave because he felt tired as the 2013 season was extremely long for us," said Liu Yongzhuo, president of Evergrande.
Liu said Lippi finally signed his name on the contract on Tuesday, the day before Evergrande's thrilling 4-2 win over Melbourne Victory in the Asian Champions League (ACL).
"Actually, Lippi has already gotten used to life with Guangzhou and he likes it here. We understand his hesitation and would like to take some of the burden off him. He nominated Massimiliano to be executive coach, and we soon reached an agreement," said Liu.
Lippi joined Evergrande in May 2012 and has led them to two CSL titles, a Chinese FA Cup and an ACL crown.
Separately, China's soccer governing body, the Chinese Football Association, on Friday unveiled 57-year-old former Lyon and Marseille boss Alain Perrin as the manager of the Chinese national soccer team.
Ahead of the announcement Lippi was a favorite for the post amid speculation that he would not renew his Evergrande deal.
