Lecture: Shanghai Women in the Lens
In director Wong Kar-wai's famous film
In the Mood for Love, Shanghai women were portrayed as graceful and elegant. However, in the lens of He Zhaoya, the vice president of the Women's Photographers Branch of the Shanghai Photographer's Association, Shanghai women are versatile and dynamic. A graduate of the Shanghai Theatre Academy, He published her first book
Woman of Shanghai with the late writer Cheng Naishan in 200
3. In 2008 and 2012, she published two photo albums on the subject of Shanghai women,
Shanghai Ladies and
Haishang Mingyuan (
Debutantes in Shanghai). He will give a speech on perspectives of Shanghai women and the stories of those who have been captured in her lens. Visit

Distant PlacesDistant Places is a new exhibition by Chinese artist Zhang Yongxu. Much of Zhang's practice is about his travels, observing and seizing upon chance encounters. For Zhang, the travels are not just something to be remembered, but also something to be reinterpreted and manipulated. The exhibited works encompass almost three decades of the artist's exploration of his native Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, as well as temporary stays in New York and California, and of his current base, Beijing.

Shanghai HousewaresThis exhibition features 60 household items from 120 objects included in the book of the same name by Shanghainese designer Zhou Qi. Inspired by examples of exquisite local craftsmanship on the edge of extinction, Zhou interviewed 10 local artisans and collected more than 100 everyday objects which were commonly seen in the 1980s and 1990s. Published last year, her book reflects the conflict between rapid industrial development and disappearing local craftsmanship. The exhibits on display include a
tangpozi (copper bed warmer), a rabbit lantern, a
kongzhu (Chinese yo-yo) and an abacus. Zhou will deliver a talk at 2 pm on March 22, sharing stories about the craftsmen she interviewed. E-mail

Amsterdam-born Jaap van Zweden has been the music director of the century-old Hong Kong Philharmonic since the 2012/1

Bruno Mars
The Moonshine Jungle Tour
American singer-songwriter Bruno Mars is coming to Shanghai for the first time for a one-night concert. The 28-year-old has won two Grammy Awards - Best Male Pop Vocal Performance in 2011 and Best Pop Vocal Album this year - and has been nominated 18 times. Mars is one of the most successful male solo singers in the world. The Hawaiian-born musician recently preformed his first Super Bowl halftime show on February 2. His hit singles include "Just the Way You Are," "Grenade," "Locked Out of Heaven," "When I Was Your Man" and "Treasure," which all topped the Billboard Hot 100 singles charts.

The Rolling Stones
14 On Fire Shanghai Concert
British rock legends the Rolling Stones will play their first Shanghai gig since 2006. Formed in London in 1962, the lineup of Mick Jagger as lead singer, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood on guitar and Charlie Watts on drums has remained unchanged since 1975. Over the years the band has released 29 studio albums with estimated sales of over 250 million. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2004, the band celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2012 and embarked a series of tours. Former member Mick Taylor will be a special guest at the Shanghai concert.
