At least three people were killed and several others injured in inter-ethnic clashes in Wajir County in northern Kenya, police confirmed on Tuesday.

Wajir County Commissioner Naftali Mungathia said the three were killed at Ogoralle village in Tarbaj constituency attackers from a rival clan over renewed skirmishes over clan boundary dividing Mandera and Wajir counties.

"This is unfortunate incident. The government will bring those criminals into justice. But as we mourn our departed brothers, sons and relative we must defeat those bend on starting inter- communal violence by showing a lot of restrains," he said.

Mungathia said the three men from the member of Degodia clan, were killed by an armed assailants suspected to from the rival Garre clan.

The deceased were among laborers working on a road project involving clearing of bushes on 25 km stretch road linking Wajir to Mandera County. The project is funded by the Wajir county government.

Mungathia said the three men were shot at a close range by their attackers believed to be from a rival clan opposed to the road project.

He said the bodies of the deceased young men were taken from the scene of the incident, which was about 15 km from Tarbaj town by security personnel and later buried in accordance to Islamic practice, after postmortem was done on their lifeless body.

The government administrator said a combined security officers were deployed in the area to pursue the criminals, whose action was bent on reigniting a fresh bloody inter-clan fighting between two communities who have been staying in peace since a peace pact was signed last year.

The member of the Garre community on Mandera side are accusing the Wajir county government of provocative move by taking the road project 5 km into their ancestral land in another county.

Early last year over 60 people were killed, hundred maimed and tens of thousands displaced from the comforts of their homes, after a fighting pitting community, which started in Mandera spilled over to the neighboring Wajir county and lasted for six months before amicably peace deal was signed.

Mungathia urged on the affected clan to embrace forgiveness and avoid retaliatory approach, which may escalate into more bloodshed.
