NASDAQ-listed Sohu.com Inc said  Tuesday it will file a lawsuit against popular news application Jinri Toutiao, or "today's headlines," for copyright infringements and unfair competition, demanding compensation of 11 million yuan ($1.76 million), news portal xinhuanet.com reported.

Sohu.com is demanding that Jinri Toutiao immediately cease infringements and apologize.

Wu Chenguang, chief editor of sohu.com, said that Jinri Toutiao had been illegally using Sohu's content on its mobile application and called for the industry to resist unfair competition.

Beijing-based technology firm Byte Dance, which operates the application, secured a third-round financing of $100 million on June 3.
