Highway police in Xiantao, Hubei Province let a man off the hook with a fine and a warning for driving without a license - and no arms.

Police officers stopped the driver after he tried to avoid a routine check of vehicles on the Shanghai-Chongqing Highway on Wednesday.

The 45-year-old surnamed Guo was operating the car with his feet and told police he had been doing so for 160,000 kilometers without an accident.

The nimble-footed man used his left to steer and his right to switch gears and brake.

Guo explained he lost his arms when he was 7 after accidentally touching a high-voltage power line.

He has learned to do everything with his feet, including how to drive, but could not apply for a license due to his disability.

Officers found Guo had been obeying traffic rules and owned auto insurance.

For the violation, the disabled driver was given a 500 yuan ($80) fine and a lecture.

"Such people deserve our respect. But it's too dangerous to drive on highways without a license. I hope he does not drive like that again," said a police officer.

Guo faced no more than 15 days' detention and a fine of up to 2,000 yuan, according to traffic laws.
