China overcame Chinese Taipei 2-1 to reach the men's tennis team semifinals at the Asian Games on Tuesday.
The Chinese women also made it to the last four, yet in totally different fashion.
Wu Di, the first Chinese man to feature in a Grand Slam tournament , beat Wang Yeu-tzu 2-0 to put China 1-0 ahead.
But Liu Yen-hsun leveled 1-1 for Chinese Taipei when he defeated Zhang Ze of China 2-0 in the second singles match.
Gong Maoxin and Li Zhe withstood the pressure of losing the first set to beat Chen Ti and Peng Hsien-yin 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 in the deciding doubles match to seal the victory for the Chinese team.
"I was a little bit nervous as this round of competition is quite important for us. We didn't perform very well at first. We have to make good preparations for the following event," said Li Zhe.
The Chinese women team, made up of Duan Yingying, Zheng Saisai, Zhang Shuai and veteran doubles specalist Zheng Jie, brushed aside Hong Kong of China 3-0. All three matched were finsihed in two sets.
"We wish we can win the gold medal. From the next round, we will encounter tougher battles. So we must try our best," said Zheng Jie, a two-time Grand Slam doubles champion.
Zheng, 31, also said that she hoped to make up for the loss in the 2002 Busan Asian Games as this was her last appearance in the Asiad.
China faces Japan in both men's and women's team semifinals.
