An established writer from Hunan Province has filed a lawsuit against a local education board after he failed the composition portion of this year's college entrance exam, local media reported Saturday.

Zhang Yiyi, an author of 10 books and other published works, scored a disappointing 29 out of 60 points for his essay in a bid to score a university seat in this year's gaokao

Zhang filed an administrative suit against the Hunan Provincial Education Examination Board in August, where he demanded that the court order the board to reveal their grading methods and criteria.

"The grading procedures and criteria should be open to the students. Specific elaborations on answers will help them know why they are right or wrong. Standard answers will put students in rural areas at a disadvantage," said Wei Dang, Zhang's lawyer.

Many Net users said the composition, which appeared online, deserved a full score for its unique perspectives on current social issues.
