A Master and His Masters

A retrospective exhibition entitled A Master and His Masters, Xu Beihong and the French Academic Painting features more than 160 masterpieces by well-known Chinese painter Xu Beihong and French masters Francois Flameng, Pascal Dagnan-Bouveret, Fernand Cormon, and Albert Besnard from École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts at China Art Museum. Artworks on showcase include sketches, calligraphy, oil paintings and Chinese ink and wash paintings.

Blissful as Gods

Shanghainese artist Xu Zhen has his latest solo exhibition at ShanghART Gallery, featuring his newly created sculptures, photos and installations. Substitution and inversion are running themes in Xu's realm, where well-known figures from different cultures and different parts of the world are harmonized, creating fresh and interesting dialogues in each piece of work. A sculpture titled Eternity at the exhibition displays the artist's spirit of integrating Western and Eastern cultures and religions by placing inverted Buddha statues upon statues of Greek gods and goddesses.

Indian Buddhist Art

Consulate General of India in Shanghai, in association with Indian Museum Kolkata and Shanghai Museum, presents an exhibition entitled Indian Buddhist Art at Shanghai Museum. The show is the largest-ever exhibition of Indian Buddhist art coming from India to China. It features more than 90 artifacts and precious manuscripts. The collection from the oldest museum in India, Indian Museum Kolkata showcases Jataka stories, scenes from the life of Gautam, the Buddha and representative specimens both in sculpture and in miniature paintings to give an idea of the evolution of the religion. The artifacts also include the iconic standing Buddha from the 5th century found at Sarnath.

10th Shanghai Biennale

The 10th Shanghai Biennale, featuring Berlin-based writer and curator Anselm Franke as chief curator, takes "Social Factory" as its theme and has invited more than 70 artists from some 20 countries to contribute more than 100 pieces for China's most important contemporary art event. According to Franke, the biennale will explore notions of subjectivity and its relations with history and the collectivization process. It seeks to present the sharp contrasts between subjective experiences, modern logic, subjectivity's rationalization and standardization, and its technological intervention. With the Power Station of Art as its main venue, the Xintiandi area, K11, Minsheng Art Museum and Jing An Kerry Centre will also hold parallel exhibitions from December through to March.

Sun Yingdi Piano Recital

Shanghai-born pianist Sun Yingdi graduated from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 2001 and won the first prize at the 7th International Franz Liszt Piano Competition in 2005. He has performed in China and overseas many times. For this Shanghai concert, he will play Liszt's Piano Concerto No.1 with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra (SSO), the very work that he played 10 years ago to win the International Franz Liszt Piano Competition. He will also play Liszt's Symphonic Poem No.3.

The 20th Anniversary of Riverdance

With an incredible two decades of global success since the show first burst out at the Eurovision Song Contest in Dublin in 1994, this year welcomes the 20th anniversary of Riverdance, which is being marked with a world tour. This 20th anniversary version will give Riverdance fans old and new the opportunity to celebrate an incredible milestone for an incredible show. This version will have a brand-new stage setting and when it tours in China, it will add some local elements like taking traditional Chinese folk songs, "Love Song of Kangding" and "My Motherland" as accompaniments.

German Musical Elisabeth

The German musical Elisabeth will come to Shanghai for the first time. Its popularity in German-language countries rivals that of Cats in English-speaking countries. Produced by the Vereinigte Bühnen Wien (VBW) in 1992, Elisabeth portrays the turbulent life and death of a Bavarian girl named Elisabeth, who is also known as Sisi after her engagement with Emperor Franz Joseph I in Austria. Caught in a golden cage, Elisabeth feels restrained by the strict rules of the court, making her want to break free. She then begins a relationship with the personification of Death. The musical has been translated into seven languages and seen by over 10 million people from 11 countries around the world, making it the most successful German-language musical of all time. The version staged in Shanghai will star Italian musical actress Roberta Valentini as Elisabeth and German musical tenor Mark Seibert in the role of Death. Performed in German with Chinese & English subtitles.

New Year's Concert by Russian National Orchestra

The Russian National Orchestra enjoys a long history of more than 100 years, and it highlights traditional Russian instruments like the balalaika. For this 2015 New Year's concert in Shanghai, the orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky's Symphony No.5, Rimsky Korsakov's Russian Easter Festival Overture, and Prokofiev's Suite from Romeo and Juliet.

Chinese musical Murder at Garden in the Air is one of the classic pieces by renowned director Meng Jinghui. The musical has been performed over 100 times and has traveled through the country.
