Drivers of two luxury cars smashed in a tunnel road in Beijing on Saturday night were not drunk, the China Central Television reported Sunday.

"I passed by the spot at 9:30 pm and saw a heavily-damaged green Lamborghini and a door ripped off a red Ferrari. It was raining heavily at that time and flood in the tunnel could have made the cars skid," a witness, Christy Guoer (pseudonym), told the Global Times.

One passenger was hurt and the two drivers will be questioned for destroying public transit facilities. Parts of 150-meter-long barriers in the tunnel were knocked over and 100-meter-long walls on the right side of the tunnel were damaged, according to the CCTV.

The Beijing Traffic Management Bureau announced on its official Sina Weibo on Sunday that the drivers are from Beijing and Jilin Province, respectively. Further investigation is underway, said the traffic management authorities.

The accident caught wide attention and sources that claim to be close to the drivers said that both vehicles were modified for drag races, reported the Beijing Evening News.

The tunnel on Datun Road is reportedly the place where many drag races are usually held with nearby residents complaining to the police about the noise created, The Beijing News reported.

Some 13 people were sentenced to up to one year in prison and fined up to 20,000 yuan ($ 3,221) for participating in a drag race in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province in February. All had their driving licenses suspended, news portal people.com.cn reported.
