May is not a traditional season for romantic movies, but the date of May 20th, which sounds like "I Love You" in Chinese, has become the perfect day for romance movies in China. Capitalizing on the date, Hong Kong director Aubrey Lam's latest work Love Without Distance debuted in cinemas in the Chinese mainland on Wednesday.
The small budget romance, starring Francis Ng, Yao Xingtong and Li Jing, tells the love story between an incredibly rich man and his true love. After a successful fur tycoon is diagnosed with a fatal illness that leaves him only months to live he meets the lovely Zhao Xiaowei. Setting out to court her with expensive gifts, he soon learns that money isn't everything.
When asked about competition from blockbusters like Avengers: Age of Ultron, producer Chen Miaomiao said: "The number of screenings is really in the hands of the market. Some like Western food, while some like Chinese. I believe Love will be able to directly take on foreign movies."
