A Jiangsu Province dog owner was ordered to pay 38,000 yuan ($6,121) in compensation after his barking pets raided a chicken coop and killed more than 900 birds, local media reported Monday.

The Nantong Intermediate People's Court upheld a previous ruling Thursday against the owner, surnamed Zhang, 74, for the chicken attack on November 22.

The court found Zhang responsible for not properly leashing his dogs, two fluffy white samoyeds.

The poultry farmer, surnamed Wang, told the court he called police after discovering the slaughter.

Police counted nearly 900 dead chickens weighing 1,329.6 kilograms, read the report.

Though a number of the chickens had been bitten, Wang claimed hundreds had died from fright.

Officers captured one of Zhang's dogs at the scene and reported spotting a hole in the back of the coop.

Zhang refused to pay compensation, arguing the coop was not adequately sealed.

However Zhang, the owner of two samoyeds, admitted to often not leashing one of his pets. He also admitted to the court he had troubles with his dogs getting into chicken coops in the past.

Named after the Samoyedic people of Siberia, samoyeds were originally bred for reindeer herding. They are known for their friendly disposition, making them poor guard dogs.
