Music group Huun Huur Tu from the city of Kyzyl in the far south of Siberia in Russia will bring their unique Khoomer throat singing style to Beijing with a concert tonight at The Orange in Sanlitun Taikoo Li. The group will sing 16 traditional Tuvan folk songs, featuring images of Tuvan's vast grassland and horses. Although Tuva is only one of the few homes to the Khoomer throat singing technique, it has become a cornerstone of the region's singing style. It takes a singer years to master the technique and they would have to have several more years of experience before they could become a part of a traditional music group like Huun Huur Tu, who spend four months a year touring Europe and North America. Tuvan throat singing is traditionally performed by a soloist or a group of soloists while accompanied by percussions creating the sound of horses, a press conference before the concert revealed.
Concert director Hou Dudu revealed that the directing team visited Tuva during its annual Khoomei festival and will broadcast the videos that they shot on a screen outside The Orange during the concert. "It was impressive to see the view and to treat one's ears to the natural and pure sounds of Khoomei. When you see the scenery, you will understand why Khoomei can only be created in such a place. With endless grasslands and only a few passersby for the whole trip, one can feel lonely and express that feeling with Khoomei," Hou said.
