After 15 years, the two main characters in the popular TVB drama, Return of Cuckoo, will reunite in the movie edition on November 20, according to a press conference in Beijing last Friday.
The 20-episode TV drama, starring then young actor Julian Cheung and actress Charmaine Sheh, won the hearts of thousands in 2000, creating audience rating records in Hong Kong's TV industry. It was rebroadcast many times on mainland TV stations in the years that followed.
Return of Cuckoo, the movie edition, will continue the two's romance with another girl (Joe Chen) breaking into their lives.
Cheung said at the press conference that in the beginning, he did not want to act in the movie because he was afraid "that I can't make any improvement to this role."
He changed his mind because he is excited to work with the original cast one more time and finds the movie's theme, reunion, quite fitting.
The movie marks the first in a collaborative effort between Chinese streaming site iQiyi's movie company iQiyi Pictures and Hong Kong local movie production company China 3D.
Li Yansong, president of iQiyi Pictures, said, "As a TVB fan myself, I deeply hope to make the movie edition of the glorious TV drama. And as a movie insider, I think this mid-budget movie will be a good way to target potential viewers and build cooperation between Hong Kong movie producers and streaming sites."
Besides Return of Cuckoo, the two will produce eight to 12 movies, with an estimated gross of 3 billion yuan ($471.9 million) in box office income.
