Critical Pervasion

Chinese artist Zhu Jia will have a solo exhibition at the Main Space and H-Space of ShanghART Gallery showcasing his news works and recent video art pieces. Born in 1963, Beijing, Zhu graduated from the oil painting department of the 3rd studio, China Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1988. As the pioneer of early video and photography art in China, Zhu Jia was in the frontier edge of practice from the late 1980s. With his impassive, matter-of-fact manner and concise way of production, as well as an aggressive while placid perspective to the reality, he became a special case in Chinese conception art. His pioneering experimental works provide adventurous precedents to the succeeding practitioners. Furthermore, his works simultaneously step with prevailing globalization of the 1990s, providing real-time critical commentary to the conversion of Chinese society. In today's world, any normalcy seems to be occasional and temporary, thus the key point is how we define "normalcy." In this new solo show, the artist will dissect the "normalcy in daily life, in politics, and in art" under critical state from different angles and perspectives, giving our audiences extended experiences when they will be put on the edge of fear and taboo, or in his words, the "very embarrassed feeling deep inside me created by reality."

Ballet Anna Karenina

Boris Eifman's ballet Anna Karenina is a true burst of inner psychological energy and is amazingly precise in delivering emotional impact upon its viewers. By setting aside all secondary story lines in Leo Tolstoy's novel, the choreographer focused on the love triangle among Anna, Karenin and Vronsky. Using dance language, Boris Eifman in his ballet managed to portray the drama of a woman being reborn. According to the choreographer, it is the love passion, the "basic instinct" which has led the heroine to the breach of the then current norms of social morality, killed motherly love in Anna Karenina and destroyed her inner world. The choreographer says that his ballet speaks not of previous times but of today: the timeless emotional content of the performance and obvious parallels to reality can't leave the contemporary viewer indifferent. Eifman Ballet of St. Petersburg was established by Boris Eifman in 1977 (the original name of the company was the Leningrad New Ballet). The concept of the company was more than innovative for its time: from the first days of its work it was conceived and developed as an experimental laboratory, a ballet theater for one choreographer. Today Eifman Ballet of St. Petersburg is renowned among ballet lovers all over the world for such repertoires as Red Giselle, Anna Karenina, Requiem and etc. These works not only represent the highest artistic level of achievements of the contemporary Russian ballet, but also turn the audience to the immortal spiritual heritage of Russian and world culture that inspired the choreographer and his fellow dancers.
