Party chief's watches wind up Net users
It was only a matter of time before another provincial official was going to be called out for sporting luxury wristwatches.
Ma Zhidong, Party chief of Fugu county in Northwest China's Shaanxi Province, ticked off social media users after he was photographed wearing expensive timepieces at seven different public events.
An unnamed official claimed Ma owned five watches worth no more than 20,000 yuan ($3,142), Xi'an-based Chinese Business View reported Thursday.
"The most expensive one is a Fiyta watch, worth about 10,000 yuan, and the others only cost several hundred yuan," the official said.
The Yulin commission for discipline inspection is investigating the allegations, media reported on Wednesday.
Accusations over the watches first surfaced in an online post dated August 20. The article was soon deleted, along with other posts about the case, news portal sohu.com reported in September.
The deleted article did not mention the number, brand or value of the watches, The Beijing News reported Thursday.
Government officials have been watchful of their accessories since Yang Dacai, a work safety official in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, received a 14-year sentence in 2012 on bribery and corruption charges after photos of him donning at least 11 different luxury timepieces surfaced online.
Yang was nicknamed "Brother Wristwatch" on social media after a sharp-eyed Web user posted the photos along with the make and retail price of each watch shown.
