Death toll in India's Manipur earthquake rises to 8

The death toll in a strong earthquake that hit India's north-eastern state of Manipur Tuesday rose to eight, officials said.

"As per the reports received from the Government of Manipur, eight people have lost their lives and 88 others were injured due to the earthquake," Indian government in an official statement said.

Officials said the relief operation were under way in the quake hit area of the state.

"One of the two National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams that arrived in Imphal yesterday has been deployed in Noney and Nungba in Tamenglong district," the government said. "Another team of NDRF is on standby at Silchar."

An earthquake measuring 6.7 on Richter scale hit Manipur and adjoining areas early Monday at 4:35 a.m. (local time).

The tremors cracked walls of buildings and hundreds of houses in the state.

India's official broadcaster All India Radio (AIR) Tuesday said team of experts from National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) would assess the safety of buildings, partially damaged in the earthquake.

The experts, according to broadcaster will advise the Manipur government on issues related to repair and retrofitting of these buildings.

In April 2015, a major earthquake hit neighbouring Nepal, killing around 9,000 people and injuring 22,000. Reports said nearly three million people were displaced and 600,000 homes were destroyed.
