China Central Television (CCTV) on Thursday launched its mascot for the coming Spring Festival gala, a 3D design of a chubby monkey figure with red circles around his eyes and a face of green and yellow colors on each side. 2016 will be the lunar Year of the Monkey, according to China's 12-year zodiac cycle.

The monkey, named Kang Kang, immediately fell into controversy, as it was described by netizens as the ugliest mascot ever.

Some laughed at the choice of yellow, green, and red as its primary colors.

"Maybe the designer was inspired by the traffic lights?" wrote Yangxiaodu on the Sina Weibo social media platform.

Most of the complaints and mockery focused on the two tumor-like balls dangling on the monkey's cheeks.

"Did he eat something poisonous?" another netizen commented.

"I guess I know what the two eggs on his face are … the 3D designer has mistaken the two hands near the monkey's face in the 2D drawing as his ears," a Weibo user named Huo Tong wrote.

Many people said they actually like the initial 2D design of the monkey, which was a Chinese water ink-style painting by famous artist Han Meilin. Han also designed the Beijing 2008 Olympics mascots, the Friendlies.

Han's assistant told the Beijing Times late Thursday that Han only designed a frontal drawing of a monkey face, and had not participated in the 3D design, nor had he seen the 3D design before it was released.

The mockery did not stop there. Redesigning Kang Kang has become a new meme.
