A viral video showing a python attempting to devour a live puppy that horrified social media users triggered a human flesh search to identify who was behind it, The Beijing News reported.
The six-second video shows the gold python, also known as a patteraless, lock its jaws on the puppy's snout, then coil itself around the animal.
The video ends before it could be clear what happened to the small, dark-haired dog.
In the video a man's voice can be heard saying, "it won't eat it," followed by "OK enough, enough" at the end.
The hashtag "python swallows puppy" garnered over 191 million reads on Sina Weibo.
Many netizens voiced their outrage over the video.
"It's enraging to watch someone feed a live dog to a snake, and it shows how sick the owner's mind is," "Zhou Chengyang CL" posted.
A human flesh search produced Wang Tao, who was accused on social media Friday of being the owner of the snake, media reported.
Wang, however, claims he had only forwarded the video in a WeChat group.
He said that the wrongful accusation and release of his personal information have resulted in numerous angry phone calls and texts.
Wang turned to police about the resulting harassment.
