China destroyed 34.8 tons of bananas worth $33,000 imported from the Philippines on March 25 found to have excessive amounts of pesticide residue.

The $33,000 in fruit was mashed and buried by Shenzhen Inspection and Quarantine Bureau, CCTV reported.

Inspectors said the bananas were found to contain amounts of carbendazim than exceed China's food safety limits.

China's National Bureau of Quality Inspection would inform the Philippines of the incident and urge the country to take measures to ensure the safety of food exported to China.
