As Brazil faced the mountainous task of completing an Olympic venue before the opening ceremony, Chinese netizens got busy molehilling a remark by a Rio construction manager about their China supplier.

With just days before competition was set to begin, work at Lagoa Stadium - the rowing and canoeing venue - was still incomplete as of Monday.

The construction manager, who declined to be named, was not optimistic that the stadium would be finished in time, the Daily Mail Online reported.

But it was a comment about a late shipment of banners coming from China that got netizens huffing.

"These [Olympic-branded] banners, they are coming from China so getting them up is taking a long, long time," the officer told the Daily Mail.

She added that workers were putting in long hours to finish construction by week, something she wasn't willing to guarantee, the paper said.

The report and comment  made it to Chinese media, triggering gripes on Sina Weibo.

"Are you building the stadium with banners?" wrote Qin Molin. "You would have received it long ago if you had paid on time," commented  Yima Wuyan.

Some scoffed that Brazil should employ Chinese contractors to build the stadium.

"Anyway, they imported everything from China, including flags, ping-pong balls, security equipment and construction machines," ZYJ said.

Thankfully there were some comments that more reflected the spirit of the Games.

"I can understand and only hope that the Games will kick off smoothly," wrote a user.
