Editor's Note:
Xihuaizhuang village in Yongledian township, Beijing's Tongzhou district is 10 kilometers away from the capital’s beltway highway. For generations the villagers have grown radish, facing a series of challenges, such as an aging population and a weakening collective economy. More than two years have passed since the first batch of postgraduates from China Agricultural University settled in Xihuaizhuang Science and Technology Academy. Under the guidance of their mentors, the postgraduates have applied new technologies and planted new varieties of tomatoes and radishes, which have doubled the collective income of this remote village and brought new hope for the development of local industries in Xihuaizhuang. At present, the university has established 139 "science and technology backyards" in 24 provincial-level regions. (Photos: Chen Tao/GT)
