Commemoration marking the 55th anniversary of China-US Ping-Pong Diplomacy held in Shanghai

A welcome ceremony and friendly matches were held in Shanghai on Monday, in commemoration of the 55th anniversary of the China-US #PingPong Diplomacy. In April 1971, the US #tabletennis team conducted a visit to China on China's invitation, prior to which the two countries had no official contact at all for more than 2 decades.

A welcome ceremony and friendly matches were held at Shanghai University of Sport on Monday, in commemoration of the 55th anniversary of the China-US Ping-Pong Diplomacy. The commemorative events were attended by former Chinese and US table tennis players who experienced firsthand the Ping-Pong Diplomacy in the early 1970s, young players and enthusiasts from both countries, and individuals promoting China-US people-to-people exchanges in various fields including sports, culture, and education. In April 1971, the US table tennis team conducted a visit to China on China's invitation, prior to which the two countries had no official contact at all for more than two decades. The Chinese table tennis delegation visited the US the following year. The exchanges between Chinese and US table tennis players at that time, later becoming known as “Ping-Pong Diplomacy,” largely contributed to the breakthroughs of China-US relations.
