The Palace Museum will unveil “Defining the Classics: A Journey to Tang and Song Calligraphy and Paintings” from September 1 to November 1 at the Wenhua Hall. The exhibition brings together 107 works of calligraphy and painting from the museum’s permanent collection, 24 of which have not been publicly displayed in nearly 30 years. After over two years of preparation, the exhibition draws from the museum’s extensive holdings of painting and calligraphic treasures, featuring top-tier national-grade relics and rare surviving masterpieces. Covering calligraphy, landscape, figure, and bird-and-flower genres, it systematically presents the gradual formation and refinement of the classical canon of the Tang (618-907) and Song (960-1279) dynasties. The show not only reveals the transmission and evolution of brush-and-ink techniques but also explores the intellectual currents, social landscapes, and humanistic values embedded in the works.
