Chinese chili sauce hits South Korean market
Chinese chili sauce brand Laoganma was seen on sale in a South Korean supermarket by a Sina Weibo user who posted a picture on March 18.
Popular in China, the Guizhou Province brand is priced at 21 yuan ($3.4) in South Korea.
Laoganma products already sell pretty well online in the US, the Nanjing-based Modern Express newspaper reported Wednesday.
Chinese Net users expressed fond glee that the earthy joys of Laoganma are available in overseas markets, but some felt unable to resist poking fun at traditional rivalries between the two nations.
"It's amazing to see Laoganma become more and more international," posted TaotaojushiZ.
"It seems that Laoganma products are available all over the world," posted Rulaidexiaomei.
"Now South Korean people can taste the charm of Laoganma," wrote Mengduoduohexiaojie.
Shenjingmaomiao wrote, "It won't take more than a few days before South Koreans start claiming Laoganma as theirs."
"We should apply to enlist Laoganma as UNESCO World Heritage as soon as possible," quipped Guaidanmensaodapangxie, "otherwise the South Koreans will claim it as their own."
