The late Noble Prize-winning Colombian writer Gabriel García Márquez, known for his remarkable novel
One Hundered Years of Solitude and an acknowledged treasure of world literature was a key figure in delivering Colombian culture to the world. Now Chinese artist are using calligraphy to pay tribute.
On July 16, the exhibition
The Light of Memory: A Calligraphy Tribute to Gabriel García Márquez was unveiled in the Latin American and Caribbean Center (LACC) in Beijing. Four Chinese calligraphers, using different styles of traditional Chinese inkmanship, depicted some of the treasured lines and aphorisms from Márquez's literary corpus.
One of the artists, Du Hao, told to the Global Times that the emotions and spirit contained in a writer's words could affect a calligrapher while creating his art.
"One sentence that left a great impression on me was: 'Wherever you go is straying, if your heart can't find a resting place,'" explained Du. "It's touching and caused fluctuations in my mood while I was writing."
The exhibition was put together by the Embassy of the Republic of Colombia in China, LACC and co-organized by Embassy of Cuba in China and Embassy of Ecuador in China.
