TV war drama jumps shark with 'bicycle beating' scene

A TV drama has found itself the center of controversy over the past two days after scenes in which a Chinese guerilla soldier beats down his enemy with a bicycle went viral.

In the scene from Tiedao Youjidui 2 (railway guerrilla force 2), guerrilla fighter Peng Liang (played by actor Zhang Yakun) pummels a Japanese soldier with a bike that he previously used to jump a train in pursuit.

The 36-episode drama, which broadcast on satellite television channels in September 2011, features battles between guerilla fighters and Japanese invaders in Shandong Province during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (1937-45).

While Chinese Net users have dubbed the character as "the god of bicycle riding" for his cycle skills, many criticized the war-themed series for going too far.

"Such a show should be banned because it humiliates our heroes and just makes them look like a joke," a Net user wrote.

"If history was really like this, only Superman could be a Chinese soldier," Net use "shengweigunian" wrote.

A number of shows and films about the war against have come under fire recently for their bizarre and improbable scenes.

Some of the more notable include heroes tearing enemies apart with their bare hands or taking down a Japanese fighter plane with a stone.

"Maybe, it's easy to get these war-themed shows approved by authorities," another Net user wrote.
