Tencent Cloud, a cloud service company under China's online giant Tencent Holdings, opened a data center in Frankfurt, Germany on Tuesday, news website thepaper.cn reported.

It's the first time that the domestic cloud service provider has set up operations in Europe, said the report. The Frankfurt facility is the company's fourth overseas data center after Canada, Singapore and the US.

Online bike-sharing platform Mobike, Hong Kong-based gaming company Oasis Games and technology start-up Junyun Tech Co have already started using the Frankfurt data center. Connecting to the center will significantly reduce data processing time for these companies and improve their users' experience, according to the website report.

China's Internet-related companies - including those in the gaming, finance and video segments - have been exploring the overseas market in recent years. "Riding on the new breed of those firms' overseas expansion, Tencent Cloud can export China's cloud technology to the global market," the company's resource director Ruan Meng was quoted as saying in the report.

The service provider is also planning to open another three data centers in Seoul, South Korea, Mumbai, India and Moscow, Russia by the beginning of 2018, Ruan said.

These overseas moves are expected to push annual revenue above 10 billion yuan ($1.47 billion) within the next two to three years, said the report. In the first quarter, Tencent's revenue from other businesses posted a year-on-year growth of 224 percent to 7.56 billion yuan. The surge was due to higher revenue from payment-related and cloud services.
