Many local residents were seen attending an annual kite festival held in New Jiangwancheng, Yangpu district, over the weekend. More than 500 kites of different styles and colors bespangled the sunny skies, according to Jiefang Daily. One innovative new kite using hot air balloon aeronautics attracted the most attention. Shanghai is one of China's most popular regions for kite flying. In order to let more citizens experience this traditional Chinese hobby, the festival invited teachers to show visitors of the event how to make their own kites. Experts hope such folk skills will be inherited by younger generations of locals. Illustration: Chen Xia/GT
