The Shanghai municipal government held a press conference on Monday to introduce action plans for Shanghai's establishment of an entire household waste classification system between 2018 and 2020.

The plans focus on four aspects. One is to clarify the process of waste classification, including waste collection, transportation and disposal. Second, more districts will promote classification systems. Thirdly, more citizens will be encouraged to cultivate good waste classification habits and to get involved in the management of waste classification.

Most importantly, the classification of household garbage will be more elaborate. Harmful garbage will not be allowed to mix with ordinary waste; wet and dry garbage will also be divided from the source.

The municipal government aims to raise the city's standards for household waste classification and disposal. By the end of 2020, Shanghai is expected to deal with 32,800 tons of household waste per day, and the recycling rate of household waste is expected to reach above 35 percent.
