The enforcement of IP protection at the China International Import Expo (CIIE) was in full force by Chinese authorities, said Gadi Oron, director general of International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC), in an interview with media in Shanghai Wednesday.

CISAC is a leading organization that works to protect the rights and promote the interests of content creators in the creative industry, with over 130 member societies in 121 countries and regions.

China is progressing in intellectual property rights protection, according to China Report 2018 launched by CISAC during CIIE's forum on the fight against IPR infringement and counterfeiting on Thursday.

According to the report, the Music Copy Society of China (MCSC), a member of CISAC, has almost doubled its collections in the period between 2013 and 2017, with a five-year growth of 92 percent to 206 million yuan ($29.7 million) in 2017, making it the fourth-largest contributor to collections in the Asia-Pacific region.

"Internet connectivity is growing and the potential market is expanding, but really the key reasons why we can see growing collections in the China market is its new approach to protect intellectual property rights in China. This is very good news for the creative industry in China and for the outside world," Oron told the Global Times.

Future growth

During CIIE, an IP protection center was opened at the exhibition hall to provide professional IP protection services and consultants to global exhibitors and buyers.

Among all the sources of collection of MCSC, digital collections have achieved the largest growth with over 400 percent between 2013 and 2017 to 78 million yuan, accounting for 38 percent of MCSC's collections.

That is nearly three times the global digital share of collections (13 percent). The report predicts that China's digital collections in 2018 will double the level of 2017.

The report sees huge potential for further growth in China. Currently China ranks 29th among all countries and regions, according to the 2018 CISAC Global Collection Report.

It is expected that China has the potential to enter the top-10 ranked markets for collections in upcoming years, according to the report.
