Online classes next big trend on Chinese streaming platforms

Paid knowledge content, both in terms of professional generated content and user generated content, has become a new successful trend on Chinese streaming sites, according to experts at a forum hosted by streaming platform iQiyi in Beijing on Wednesday.

"Education has become a new battlefield for content," Lu Jun, who started a new educational channel on iQiyi after quitting a job at a publishing house, said at the event.

"I believe the best way to change our reality is to help better people's thinking and knowledge through the internet instead of just publishing a large number of books," he added.

Like Lu, many skilled people are uploading online classes, especially to streaming sites, for netizens to watch for a fee.

Geng Danhao, the senior vice president of iQiyi, noted that 2019 will see rapid growth in these paid online classes in order to meet user demand.

He pointed to the impact of debate show You Can You BIBI as an example. After the show became popular, expert debaters established online classes to teach people the skills used in a debate.
