China has expressed serious concern and strongly condemns a motion passed by Canadian Parliament to insist the government take a harder line against the so-called “national security threats” from China and Chinese telecom firm Huawei, according to a statement by the spokesperson of the Chinese embassy in Canada.

“China urges some politicians to stop smearing and discrediting China immediately, and stop the wrongdoings for political manipulation when it comes to China-related agenda,” the spokesperson said on Thursday.

The Conservative motion was passed on Wednesday by 179 votes to 146, and calls on the Canadian government to decide within 30 days whether to allow Huawei to supply equipment for Canada's 5G wireless networks, media reports said.

The motion also calls on the Canadian government to table a plan to deal with the so-called “intimidation by China” of Canadians within Canada’s borders.

Responding to the accusations, the spokesperson of the Chinese embassy in Canada said China has always held onto the principles of mutual respect and non-interference in each other's internal affairs. “It has never and does not have any interest in interfering in the internal affairs of other countries.”

“Meanwhile, we do not accept any groundless accusations against China,” the spokesperson said.

As a private Chinese firm which develops by itself, the embassy said Huawei has established good safety records.

In the years since it started operating in Canada, the company has made positive contributions to the local economic and social development.

And the embassy hopes Canada could provide a fair and non-discriminatory business climate for Huawei.

The embassy’s statement came after Chinese Foreign Ministry stated its stand on Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou’s case on Wednesday.

No matter how hard Canada tries to hide the truth and mislead the public, it won't be able to shrug off its own responsibilities in the detention of Meng, as the more it tries to hide, the more it will be exposed, making people realize the essence behind Meng's detention, a spokesperson from the ministry said on Wednesday.
