Three students from the Chinese University of Hong Kong were detained on Monday night for suspected involvement in throwing unknown white powder multiple times at campus security guards, Hong Kong media on.cc reported.

The three, aged between 19 and 22, were detained on charges of suspected illegal assembly and assault with intent to cause certain acts to be done or committed, according to Hong Kong police.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong confirmed the arrest of its students in a statement published on its website on Monday, but did not specify the exact number.

Eight black-clad people stormed campus security guards near the MTR station on January 11, throwing unknown white powder multiple times at guards, knocking down railings and other facilities before fleeing, the university said. The university immediately reported the incident to police, as some security guards were injured.

According to Hong Kong media, the black-clad people shouted that students did not need to present their certificates to enter the campus and then hit security guards after they tried to stop them.

Hong Kong police also announced on Monday that a 27-year-old man was sentenced to six months in prison after shining laser pointers at police officers' eyes during protests on August 13, 2019 and attempting to paralyze traffic of Hong Kong international airport.

A 21-year-old student was also sentenced on Monday to five months and two weeks for spray-painting a cash machine center in Wan Chai and obstructing police officers from performing normal duties on January 1, 2020, police said on their Facebook page.
