Plummeting cherry prices in recent days have allowed Chinese people to enjoy eating the normally expensive tropical fruit in large amounts in the winter of 2021, prompting netizens to coin the term "cherry freedom."

However, the tasty fruit brought unexpected misery to one woman, surnamed Wang, who suffered from blood stool and fainted in the toilet after eating three kilograms of cherries in five days.

After receiving two boxes of cherries from her relatives in Nanning, South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and scoffing it all down in the next few days, she suddenly felt cramps in her stomach, and went to the bathroom only to find her stool was filled with blood.

She then ran back and forth to the toilet more than 20 times, eventually fainting there, where her family found her and rushed her to hospital.

The doctor diagnosed Wang as having iron or cyanide poisoning from eating too many cherries. "The iron content in cherries is particularly high. Obsessive cherry consumption, coupled with previous underlying conditions, caused the blood stool," the doctor said.
