Over The Moon, a 2020 musical fantasy animated film, has become the first China-US coproduced animation work to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature, according to an announcement on Monday.

Helmed by acclaimed director Glen Keane, Over The Moon tells a story about little girl Fei Fei's imaginative adventure to the moon, where she gets the chance to see the "moon goddess" Chang'e and see a beautiful palace on the moon.

The animated film was jointly produced by Netflix Animation and Chinese film company Pearl Studio in Shanghai and animated by Sony Pictures Imageworks.

If it wins, Over the Moon will become the first China-US coproduced film to win the Best Animated Feature Film award ever since the category was established in 2001.

Apart from Over the Moon, four other films are competing for the award: Onwards (2020), A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon (2019), Wolfwalkers (2020) and Soul (2020). The latter animated film from Pixar has earned a good reputation among Chinese mainland audiences.
