A fireman has been hailed by the public for springing into action to rescue a suicidal mother who attempted to jump off a high-rise building while carrying her infant child, People's Daily reported Tuesday.

In the video circulating online Tuesday, a woman with a baby in her arms was seen kneeling on top of the fence wall on the terrace of a building in Changzhou, East China's Jiangsu Province, while shouting at firefighters who came to the rescue to stay away.

As the situation turned into a standoff, one of the firemen suddenly jumped up, grabbing the mom and her baby and dragging them back to the ground from the edge.

Media reported a family dispute as the reason for her mental meltdown, but did not reveal further details.

While netizens applauded the bravery of the fireman, the incident also prompted a discussion over postpartum depression, with some wondering what happened to the mother that could push her over the edge.

One netizen pointed out that "a woman might experience some changes both physically and mentally after bearing a child, which makes her vulnerable. They need to be taken better care of."
